Abstract

1362613 Artificial tobacco IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 6 Feb 1973 [16 March 1972] 12357/72 Heading C3F [Also in Division A2] A synthetic tobacco comprises a tobacco substitute (a material which may be smoked like tobacco but is not of tobacco origin) mixed with the extract obtained by treating Nicotiana Rustica with a nicotine-dissolving solvent. The substitutes specified in the claims are cellulose, cellulose ether, oxidized cellulose and lettuce leaves; the substitute exemplified is the product obtained by heating α-cellulose impregnated with ammonium sulphamate. Other materials present include glycerol, citric acid, potassium citrate, casein, calcium and magnesium carbonates and bentonite. Between 65% and 90% by weight of tobacco based on the mixture may be added. The extract may be fractionated into nicotinerich and flavocerant-rich fractions, which may be recombined in appropriate proportions to give acceptable smoke.
