Abstract
933,131. Hydraulic jet propulsion. A. H. CROUCHER. Jan. 17, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 5069/61. Class 114. An hydraulic jet propulsion apparatus comprises a pump 4 which expels water as a jet through a flexible duet 5, e.g., of corrugated reinforced rubber, which may be bent to direct the jet for steering, reverse propulsion or no propulsion. The rearward end of the duct 5 is supported by a bezel member 21 which is pivotably mounted about a horizontal axis in a yoke 8, which yoke is pivotally mounted about a vertical axis in a support 6. A steering wheel 9 is connected to a cable drum 14 and both are supported by a column 10 which is pivotally mounted on a bracket 11 for fore and aft movement. A cable 13 passes around the drum 14 and is arranged to pass over pulleys 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21a so that movement of the column forwards or backwards causes the duct 5 to direct the jet from the no propulsion position to the ahead or astern propulsion position, respectively, and rotation of the wheel 9 causes the jet to be directed laterally for steering. An arched member 28 is provided to prevent the duct deflecting when in the astern propulsion position.
