Abstract

950,610. Propulsion and control of submersible craft. D. I. REBIKOFF. July 29, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 26528/60. Heading B7V. In a submarine craft having a screw or screws 3 enclosed by an annular duct 4 to create a propelling jet of liquid, the duct is orientable by the pilot both in the vertical and horizontal planes to provide directional control of the craft. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the entire near portion A of the craft is articulated about the point 1. The screw 3 is driven by a motor 2 powered from a battery 17 in the main enclosure 7 of the vessel. The duct 4, which forms a guard around the screw, is supported by blades 5 which act as fixed blades co-operating with the blades of the screw 3. Orientation of the portion A, and hence of the duct 4, is by a footactuated bar (not shown) and by control rods or cables 9 connected via levers 11, 12 to a lever 13 which also actuates front fins 14 that function similarly to ailerons on an aircraft. In another embodiment the rear part of the craft is fixed to the front part and the duct swivels about a ball joint at the apex of the screw boss.
