Abstract

An apparatus for treating a liquid charge phase with an immiscible liquid reagent phase containing solid dispersed catalyst comprises a mixing zone for emulsifying both liquid phases, a reaction zone free from any obstacle opposing the ascending laminar flow of liquids and comprising means for preventing separation of the emulsion for a time sufficient to enable the process to be completed and for preventing the mixture emerging from the reaction zone from mixing with the entering liquid charge, a separator comprising means for separating liquid reagent phase containing dispersed catalyst and means for recycling said reagent phase with a fresh liquid charge. The mixing and reaction zones may be in one unit and separated by a horizontal perforated plate, intimate contact of the phases being effected by two mixing screw agitators. The apparatus may be employed for refining liquid petroleum hydrocarbons by a process wherein mercaptans are oxidized by oxygen or a gas containing it, in contact with an alkaline aqueous phase and a solid dispersed catalyst of the sulphur dye class.
