Abstract

<PICT:0793025/IV (b)/1> <PICT:0793025/IV (b)/2> Apparatus for the nitration of glycerine or toluene comprises a contacting vessel 1, Fig. Ia, with stirrer 3, liquid inlets 14, 15, and a rotatable drum 4 open at its lower end into which the mixture from the vessel passes and is separated centrifugally, the heavier liquid being drawn off at 12 and the lighter liquid at 13. In a modification, Fig. Ib (not shown), the lower end of the drum 4 is above the surface of the liquid in vessel 1 and a slanting open-ended pipe leads from below the level of the liquid to inside the lower part of the drum. The drum 4 may be provided internally with narrow longitudinal strips to assist rotation of the liquid or with obstructions in its upper part to prevent deposition of solid matter. Several vessels may be combined for counter-current contacting of liquids in steps. The apparatus shown in Fig. VI is used for the nitration of glycerine to nitroglycerine. Glycerine and nitrating acid enter at 31 and 32 and react in vessel A; acid withdrawn at 33 is cooled at 37 and returned to vessel A via line 35. Nitroglycerine withdrawn from vessel A via line 38 is purified by counter-current washing in vessels B, C, D with liquid introduced at 48. The nitration of toluene to trinitrotoluene is also described.
