930,320. Rack and pinion gearing. BURMAN & SONS Ltd., and W. H. BRIGGS. Dec. 8, 1961 [Dec. 15, 1960], No. 43239/60. Class 80 (1). In a rack and pinion vehicle steering mechanism, a pressure plate 12 is resiliently urged against the side of the rack remote from the pinion by screw means 15 to vary the force exerted on the rack 10. The pressure plate may be of resilient construction, being curved or having a rib to engage the rack and located laterally by fixed pegs 13 over an abutment 14. Alternatively the pressure plate may be of rigid construction and resiliently urged against the rack by a spring between the plate and the adjusting screw.
