Abstract

930,178. Pipe couplings. MANN & CO. A.B. March 2, 1962, No. 8236/62. Class 99(1). A coupling for conduits for a pressure medium comprises a housing 1 rigidly connectible with a conduit and having a valve mechanism 7 located in the outer end of a passage 3 and for the control of the flow of a pressure medium therethrough, and a seating 8 located at the outer end of the passage, and a coupling member 2 also provided with a passage 3, the housing supporting first and second lid portions 18, 19 for swinging movement toward and away from each other about parallel axes 16, 17, those lid portions in the closed positions thereof forming a protective cover for that end of the housing at which the seat is located. There are actuating means on the lid portions for effecting simultaneous swinging movement of the lid portions in opposite directions to permit insertion of the member 2 between them, one of the lid portions being spring-urged towards the closed position of the lid portions and arranged to engage and press the member 2 against the seat 8. As shown, the valve comprises a sleeve 7 provided with an annular rubber seat 8 and holes 9 which are normally closed to the flow of pressure medium by a cup 10 acted on by a spring 6 and sealing against a collar 14. A handle 22 is provided on the lid 18 which is kept in the closed position by a spring 16; arms 24, 25 on the lid portions co-operate to open the latter upon downward movement of the handle. The member 2 includes a plate 27 rectangular, square or oval in shape and having an inclined lower edge 31 to engage the lid portion 18 and a channel-shaped upper edge formed with recesses 30 which co-operate with projections 29 to ensure that the member is hingedly articulated about the upper edge thereof when being pressed against the seat 8. The housing 1 and member 2 may each have several passageways.
