Abstract
930,018. Degassing metal. W. C. HERAEUS G.m.b.H., and RUHRSTAHL A.G. March 10, 1961 [March 12, 1960; Sept. 24, 1960], No. 8842/61. Class 72. Apparatus for the vacuum degassing of molten metal and other liquids by the circulatory process comprises a container for the liquid to be treated which is sealed by, a lid and is evacuated. As shown, a container 2 is closed by a lid 3 and is connected by a pipe 15 to a vacuum pump 16. The container 2 is connected to a second vacuum chamber 10 by a pipe 8, through liquid enters the second chamber, and a pipe 9 through which the degassed liquid returns to the container. A Roots pump 19 produces a vacuum in the chamber 10 of greater value than that in the container and the liquid flows from the container to chamber. In order that the pressures in the two vessels may be controlled the Roots pump is by-passed by a valved pipe 20 leading to the pipe 15 and the pipe 15 has a valve 22 connected to the discharge side of the Roots pump. An inert gas may be supplied to the liquid in the pipe 8 and the chamber 10 may be provided with baffles 25 over which the liquid may flow in a thin stream.
