Abstract
929,353. Packaging envelopes. R. WINKLER and K. DUNNEBIER. Nov. 29, 1960 [April 1, 1960], No. 40909/60. Class 94(1). In an apparatus for grouping and banding envelopes, groups of envelopes are conveyed by sets of pliable grippers 33, 34 which are mounted articulately on pairs of chains 3, 8 which are driven forward intermittently, each step corresponding to the distance between consecutive grippers 33 on the chains 3, 8. Envelopes are fed in singly by spiral conveyers 1, 1a, 2 and accumulate against stops 71 and 47<SP>11</SP>, 48<SP>11</SP> which move forward to accommodate them. As these moving stops reach the further stops 43, 38, the former are withdrawn from the stream of envelopes and returned to their initial position, Fig. 1, where they are reinserted to divide a group P of envelopes from the incoming stream B. During the return movement of the stops 47<SP>11</SP>, 48<SP>11</SP>, which are in the form of scissors, the chains are advanced one step; the grippers 33, 34 (on the right hand side of Fig. 1) are rising and the two grippers 33 engage with the stops 47<SP>11</SP>, 48<SP>11</SP> and are bent away from their partners 34. Rising further the grippers 33, 34 engage the group P and as the stops 47<SP>11</SP>, 48<SP>11</SP> move in, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the grippers are released and spring inwards to grip the group P and convey it forward towards P<SP>1</SP>, the stop 38 being withdrawn by means of cams 41 on the chain and stop 38 by electromagnets 45. Meanwhile, the group of envelopes formerly at P<SP>1</SP> moves towards P<SP>11</SP>, a band 76 being passed around it by arms 94, 95 and held in place, while sealed, by clamp members 89, 76; the group formerly at P<SP>11</SP> moves towards P<SP>111 </SP>where the grippers are withdrawn therefrom. Completed packages at P<SP>111 </SP>are prevented from falling over backwards by a stop 85 which is pivoted away when a package is passing but falls back immediately after under the action of a spring.
