Abstract

929,098. Thermal switches. MERRYWEATHER & SONS Ltd. Feb. 7, 1962 [Feb. 20, 1961], No. 6156/61. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XIII] A fire-detecting device comprises a protective housing 1 containing a microswitch 2 actuated by movement of a lever arm 3 attached to a pivot shaft 4 projecting through a housing wall 6, the operating movement being obtained from the differential expansion of a rod or bar 10 and a base member 11 of dissimilar material. Member 11 is a cast-iron bar bolted to an external web 19 of the housing 1 and screwed at 9 to one end of a brass bar 10, the other end of which is screwed at 8 to a lever arm 7 carried by the pivot shaft 4. Differential expansion of bar 10 and member 11 causes a rocking movement of arm 7, the movement being magnified and transmitted through the longer arm 3 to actuate the plunger 15 of the microswitch 2. The operating temperature is adjusted using an abutment screw 16 carried by the arm 3. The housing 1 has a front cover-plate 12 giving access to the microswitch and a side cover-plate 13 giving access to an extension 14 of the housing for terminal leads. In another embodiment (Figs. 3-5, not shown), the expansion bar 10 has a protective wire grill and the switch device is mounted in a further circular casing attached to a wall or ceiling.
