Abstract

928,673. Curtain walls. BOULTON & PAUL Ltd. Nov. 4, 1960 [Nov. 7, 1959], No. 38004/60. Class 20 (4). A multi-storeyed building structure comprises, horizontally spaced vertical rails 7, Fig. 1, extending between adjacent floors 1 and supported at each floor by a guide piece 6 secured directly to the floor and connecting the lower end of one rail to the upper end of the next rail below, each guide piece being secured rigidly to one of said ends whilst serving as a guide for the other end to permit relative vertical (but not horizontal) movement between the two rails so connected, and a number of facade units 9 each extending generally between adjacent floors and between two horizontally spaced vertical rails and having means for permitting relative vertical movement between vertically adjacent facade units. In Fig. 1, the rails 7 are box sectioned to contain the guide pieces 6 and the upper end of each rail is welded or bolted at 11 to the guide piece and the lower end is left unconnected to the guide piece. The facade units 9, shown removed to the right in Fig. 1 are connected by groove and tenon arrangements 18 and are supported between horizontally adjacent rails 7 by bolts passing through aligned holes 13. The Specification describes, with reference to Figs. 4-7 (not shown), several constructions employing rails of T 1 -Z- or U-section, and appropriate forms of guide pieces.
