Abstract

928,000. Sheet-delivery apparatus. NATIONAL CASH REGISTER CO. Sept. 27, 1961 [Nov. 1, 1960], No. 34667/61. Class 100 (1). Apparatus for delivering sheets such as bank cheques to a stack comprises co-operating feeding and pressure rollers 115 and 116 for feeding the sheets in a forward direction and co-operating feeding and pressure rollers 123 and 119 for feeding the sheets in a reverse direction, the pressure rollers 116 and 119 being mounted on a common spring-urged plate 117 rockable about the point 18, whereby the plate is rocked in a clockwise direction (as shown) when the sheet is being fed forwardly by rollers 115, 116 so as to dissociate the reverse feeding rollers 123, 119, whereas, when the trailing edge of the sheet has passed beyond the forward feeding rollers 115, 116, the spring rocks the plate in a counterclockwise direction to reassociate the reverse feeding rollers 123, 119 whereby the sheet is fed in the reverse direction. The sheets are fed along a guide 104, from a parent machine imprinting the sheets with magnetic characters, by co-operating rollers 107, 108. The feed rollers 107, 115 and the pressure rollers 108, 116 are formed from rubber and nylon, respectively. The pressure rollers are spaced from their associated feed rollers to prevent undue wear and are provided with side flanges, Fig. 4 (not shown), overlapping the peripheral surfaces of their associated feed rollers, so that a sheet passing between a pair of rollers is curved and forced into engagement with the feed roller. The reversing rollers 123, 119 are made of nylon and feed a sheet downwardly between co-operating rollers 115, 126 to a switch 131 which deflects the sheet to an upper or lower stack. The switch is positioned by linkage 135 actuated by a solenoid 106 responsive to the parent machine. The sheet is fed along a guide 143 by co-operating feed and pressure rollers 146 and 147. The roller 146 has a flat area 180, whereby the sheet is moved intermittently until it engages a constantly rotating roller 148, and is set at an angle so that the sheet is moved laterally to register it against the back plate 99 of the apparatus. The lower guide plate 144 is cut away as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 6 and the lower right-hand side of the back plate 99 bent rearwardly, so that a sheet is rotated to disengage the lower guide plate 144 and fed along the top of the stack to abut front stops 153 of a collapsible table 149 by the roller 148. The table is mounted on cross-legs 150, 151 urged upwardly by spring means. A sheet deflected to the lower stack is fed along a guide 157 by rollers 107, 108. A detector, comprising an arm 154 attached to a micro-switch 156, is located in the guide 143 and is operated each time a sheet passes thereover to deactivate the parent machine, so that should a sheet become jammed in the guide the switch 156 remains open to prevent further operation of the parent machine until the fault is cleared.
