Abstract
1,096,878. Feeding and delivering sheets. MIEHLE - GOSS - DEXTER Inc. Aug. 17, 1965 [Aug. 25, 1964], No. 35167/65. Headings B6B and B6H. Signatures to be stapled or otherwise fastened together at a station 13 are fed from a pile, or delivered from a buckle-type folder 17, first by an endless belt (20, Figs. 2-5) and then by a series of endless belts (21), both constantly driven, and registered at the station 13 by front stops 14 where they actuate a detector means 15 which causes the operation of the stapling &c. mechanism. The signatures are then released by the stops 14 and fed by an endless belt 22 through a buckle-type folder 16, which folds them about the line of staples, and delivers them to a stacking means 23. Registering and detecting means; stapling,- As shown, the signatures are stapled together by a known wire stitcher 13 which is pneumatically operated, and is adjustably mounted on the machine frame; where there are several titchers, these are operated simultaneously. The stop means 14 comprises a number of U-shaped fingers (37) each secured to a shaft (38) carried in end brackets 32 which are slidably mounted on the machine frame, and the shaft (38) is rockable to release the signatures for forward movement, by a spring-loaded electromagnet (40). The signature detecting means 15 comprises a bifurcated and arcuately shaped hold-down member (30) spaced above the belts 21, and an inverted U-shaped finger (33) with one end secured to a microswitch (34) and extending through the bifurcations in the member (30), and the other end bent below the plane of the belts (21). Thus, the leading end of a signature fed by the belts (21) will depress the finger (33) and close the switch (34) to cause the operation of the stitcher (13). The stops and detector are adjustable along the machine frame. When the stitcher (13) has completed its fastening operation, it causes the electromagnet (40) to lower the stop fingers (37), and the belts (21) carry the signatures forward.
