Abstract
512,870. Sewing-machines; stapling. POLLAK, J. E., (Brehmer, Geb.). March 24, 1938, No. 9059. [Class 89 (iii)] [Also in Group XVI] Folded signatures and the like are fed from a pile to the saddle of a stitching-machine by automatic mechanism which feeds the sheets in succession in the direction of the longitudinal fold which may be registered against an adjustable guide 7 by inclined feed rollers 6, and the two halves of each fold are caused to pass on the opposite sides of an opening device 9 which is shaped to cause the signature to pivot downwardly about the longitudinal fold until the entire signature hangs astride a saddle-like extension 14 from which it is transferred to the swinging saddle 1 of the stitching-machine. The transferring means may comprise drop rollers 17 co-operating with rollers 18 on a feed chain 20 with projections 19, and finally projections 2 on a conveyer 3. The signatures are given an initial opening by a wedge device which is set to engage the projecting edge of an unevenly folded signature. If the signatures are folded evenly suction rollers may be used to effect a preliminary opening of the signatures. The opening-device 9 tapers towards its edge 13 which is arranged obliquely with respect to the leading edge of the signature. An adjustable guide 25 engages one edge of the signature and assists the bending down of this edge. When the signature passes the transverse portion of the opener 9 it turns by its own weight and the guide 25 until it hangs astride the saddle 14. The passage of the signatures from the feed table 6 of the separating-mechanism C to the opening-device may be controlled by rising front stops and a drop-roller feed.
