Abstract

927,420. Regulating. MORSE INSTRUMENT CO. Aug. 15, 1961 [Aug. 22, 1960], No. 29387/61. Class 7(6). A single lever engine control unit comprises a rotatable throttle control member 23, Fig. 1, and a rotatable clutch control member 54 operatively interconnected for simultaneous rotation through a driving connection 21, which is disengageable by axial movement of the throttle control member to permit throttle operation without clutch operation. A 30 degrees movement of lever 24 from the neutral position shown in Fig. 1 causes a 45 degrees counter rotation of clutch control member 54 through shaft 20, pin 39, and drive member 21 which acts through push rod 61 and cable 60 to fully engage the clutch whilst any slight displacement of push rod 43 and cable 46 is absorbed in the cable backlash, without opening the throttle.. Lever 24 is maintained in idle forward and idle reverse positions by detent notches 79, 80. Movement of lever 24 in either direction beyond 30 degrees progressively opens the throttle and causes disengagement of the teeth on drive member 33 and clutch control member 54, and engagement of arcuate surfaces 81 or 82 with circular edge 83 then maintains the arms 55, 56 in their 45 degrees position. Any movement of the clutch control member 54 from the neutral position causes wing plate 70, Fig. 2, to obstruct axial movement of the edge 37 of the throttle control member 23. When both control members are in the neutral position, the shaft 20 can be moved axially against spring 35 to disengage pin 39 from notch 40 in the drive member 21. The edge 37 then engages in a cut away portion 72 of wing piece 70 to prevent rotation of the clutch control arm 54 during throttle opening by lever 24. The open rear of housing 11 may co-operate with a control of opposite hand for twin control mounting. The lever 24 may be selectively positioned by means of splines 25 and the unit may have a push or pull throttle opening action. Spring washer 34 provides braking friction to drive member 21. The relative ratio of the geared members 33, 54 may be varied.
