Abstract

1,152,182. Regulating I. C. engines. TELEFLEX PRODUCTS Ltd. May 18, 1966 [May 18, 1965; Aug.2, 1965], Nos.21092/65 and 33018/65. Heading F1B. [ Also in Division F2] A single lever control for the throttle and reversing gear of a boat, which can be disengaged from the reversing gear to allow full range throttle operation in neutral, comprises a manual control lever fast on a shaft 17 which is linked to a throttle control arm 43 and carries a freely rotatable partially toothed pinion 20 meshing teeth on a gear control plate 22 and is clutchable to the shaft 17 by a spring pressed pin 52. For independent throttle operation a plunger 56 is depressed to disengage the clutch 52 whereafter rotation of the shaft 17 acts through a crank 32, and links 34, 38 to rotate the control arm 43 which is connected by a cable to the engine throttle. A common pivot 39 of the links 34, 38 slides in a slot 40 and the crank 32 may be fixed to the shaft 17 Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) or may as shown, rotate with the shaft 17 whilst being laterally slidable relative thereto and guided by a projection 33 engaging a common slot 36 in a fixed plate 35, so that during the first 35 degrees rotation of the shaft 17 there is little or no rotation of the control arm 43. With the clutch 52 engaged the first 35 degrees of rotation of the shaft 17 rotates the gear control plate 22 in the appropriate direction to engage forward or reverse ratios whilst effecting only slight movement of the throttle control arm 43. During further rotation of the shaft 17 the gear control plate 22 remains stationary as the teeth 21, 22 move out of mesh whilst the throttle is fully opened. Ball detents (50, Fig. 4, not shown) hold the pinion 20 in the forward neutral and reverse positions. In Fig. 12 (not shown) two controls are arranged back-to-back for controlling two engines and two gears.
