Abstract
932,181. Controlling engine and clutch. MORSE INSTRUMENT CO. Aug. 25, 1961 [Sept. 2, 1960], No. 30686/61. Class 7(6). A single lever engine control unit, comprises a throttle control mechanism including a wheel drive member 20, Fig. 1 rotatable by a lever 15, a clutch control mechanism including a shuttle block 54 which moves tangentially of the wheel drive member to engage the clutch, wherein a first driving connection between the shuttle block and the wheel drive member engages the clutch during the first portion of rotation from a neutral position of the wheel drive member and a second driving connection disengages the clutch on return of the wheel drive member. A 45 degrees movement of lever 15 from the neutral position shown in Fig. 1, causes engagement of rollers 58, 59, Fig. 2 by the sides 31, Fig. 4 of indentations 29, 30 in the wheel drive member rims 24 and'25. Shuttle block 54 moves rectilinearly to the right and engages the engine clutch through cable 62 whilst at the same time only a slight displacement of push rod 36 is caused, which is absorbed by the backlash in cable 39 without causing opening of the throttle. Continued rotation of lever 15 beyond the forward engine-idling position shown in Fig. 4 opens the throttle whilst shuttle block 54 is maintained in its displaced position by the locking effect of bearing surfaces 26 and 27 and tracking surfaces 52, 53 against rollers 58, 59 respectively. As lever 15 is counter-rotated towards neutral position, pin 33 engage surface 82 of the cam recess 70, to return shuttle block 54 to the clutch disengaged position. The control unit operates similarly for engine reverse clutch engagement and the swivel connection 35 may be displaced by 180 degrees for pull operation of the throttle. Two similar housings may be mounted side-by-side for twin engine controls. Braking friction is provided by a wavy spring washer 22.
