Abstract

927,324. Circuit arrangements for igniting ignitrons. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Jan. 17, 1962 [Jan. 20, 1961], No. 1697/62. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] An ignitron 7 is provided with igniting current of saw-tooth waveform, Fig. 2a (not shown), by a circuit in which firstly a capacitor 1 discharges through the branch comprising a thyratron 4 controlled by a pulse-voltage source 8, the igniter 5 and cathode 6 of the ignitron and an inductor 3, and then the energy stored in the inductor 3 discharges through the branch comprising a resistor 11, a rectifier 10 and members 5, 6. The resistor 11 may be omitted and the capacitor 1 connected to a tapping on the inductor 3, to produce a different current waveform, Figs. 3, 3a (not shown). Members 1, 2 and 4 may be isolated from the remainder of the circuit by a transformer, Fig. 4 (not shown). In another modification, Fig. 5, an auto-transformer 14 is introduced to reduce the magnitude of the thyratron current, Fig. 5a (not shown), the function of rectifier 16 being analogous to that of rectifier 10 in Fig. 2.
