On detecting the increase in force which is necessary to complete a movement in a cycle of movements performed by a plate 24 which packs refuse into a vehicle and is moved by rams 30, 40, the sensing means which detect the pressure increase initiate the next movement in the cycle. The plate 24 is connected to a bracket 22 by a link 20. Starting from the position shown in Fig. 2, the ram 30 pushes the plate 24 downwards, the ram 40 pulls ths plate 24 to the right and the ram 30 raises and moves the top of plate 24 to the right. The ram 40 then returns the device to its original position. Associated with the ram 30, Fig. 6, and ram 40, are from pressure-sensitive devices RV1-RV4. The rams, as shown in Fig. 6' are in the position shown in Fig. 2. When the main valve VMC is pushed to the F for forward position hydraulic fluid flows through lines A, A1, A2 to sequence valves SV1, SV2 through which the fluid passes to lines L, M as to extend ram 30 and hold rams 40, 41 extended. On completion of the downward stroke of the rod 31 of ram 30 valve RV1 will open in response to the pressure increase in the ram 30. Fluid is thus admitted to a control cylinder CC2 through line C1 to move the sequence valve SV2 to the F for forward position, thus setting in motion the next movement of the cycle. Thus, the plate continues to move cyclically until the main control is either switched-off or moved to R for reverse, in which case the plate cycles in the reverse direction. If, during any one of the ram movements the plate is arrested by a piece of refuse, thus causing a rise in hydraulic pressure similar to that which occurs at the end of a movement, the next movement of the cycle is initiated by the appropriate pressure sensitive valve. The device thus frees itself from jams and the mechanism cannot be damaged by excessive pressure. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, an elevator B raises the refuse from a hopper 13a to a packer plate 24a. Rams 30a, 40a (not shown), and 41a push the plate 24a in a similar series of movements to those described with reference to the plate 24, the hydraulic system also being similar.
