Abstract
1395905 Telescopic position-adjusting fluid devices AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 8 May 1972 [6 May 1971] 13437/71 Heading F2S In a telescopic position-adjusting device for an aircraft seat back (Fig. 1, not shown), in which liquid is normally prevented from flowing into or out of a chamber 17 from or into another chamber by a valve member 33, the liquid in the other chamber is acted on by gas separated from it by a deformable diaphragm 21. Contraction of the device, corresponding to movement of the seat back from an upright to a reclined position, is normally prevented since liquid can not leave the chamber 17 because of the closed valve member 33. Operation of a pin 37 either directly or by fluid pressure or a Bowden cable (not shown), causes a plunger 34 to push the valve member 33 off its seat 32. An external force on the seat back in the appropriate direction then contracts the device, liquid flowing out of the chamber 17 and via 30, 29, 35 to the other liquid chamber (formed between the diaphragm 21 and the chamber 17), against the pressure of the gas. Extension of the device, corresponding to movement of the seat back from an inclined position back into an upright position, can be effected in either of two ways. The pin 37 can be operated as above to push the valve member 33 off its seat. The pressure of the gas will then force liquid from the other chamber via 35, 39, 30 into the chamber 17 to extend the device. Alternatively, an external force applied to the seat back in the appropriate direction moves a member 20 into engagement with a peg 36 on the plunger 34 and so pushes the valve member 33 off its seat, the pressure of the gas then continuing the extension movement as above. Small changes in temperature causing changes in the volume of liquid in the device are compensated for by deformation of the diaphragm 21. In the event of a fire the fusible plug 23 melts and releases the gas from the device. The maximum stroke of the device is determined by the position of a projection 40 with respect to an opening 41. This position is adjustable (Fig. 2, not shown).
