Abstract

974,312. Hydraulic shock-absorbers. C. F. TAYLOR (METAL WORKERS) Ltd. May 1, 1963 [May 1, 1962], No. 16577/62. Heading F2S. A device for retaining a reclining seat back in a required set position comprises a cylinder 1 which is attached to a pivoted seat back (not shown) by a lug 3 and has a piston 4 slidable within it. The piston 4 is integral with a hollow piston-rod 6 provided with a forked end 10 attached to a seat arm (not shown). A ball valve 11, loaded by a spring 12 and controlled by a rod 20, normally closes a port 13 from a port 14 to prevent exchange of hydraulic fluid between spaces 15, 16, respectively, above and below the piston 4. The rod 20 is actuated by a push-button or pull-rod attached respectively to a link 22a pivoted at 26 and a pull link 24a on the fork 10, the lower end 20a of the rod 20 cooperating with an edge 21a on the link 22a so that pressure on the seat back slides the cylinder 1 over the piston 4 to compress a return spring 1a and cause fluid to pass from the space 15 to the space 16. The total fluid volume in spaces 15, 16 is kept constant by a dummy piston-rod 19 entering the space 16 as the piston-rod 6 leaves the space 15. Release of the rod 20 allows the spring 12 to close the valve 11 and lock the inclined seat back against movement in either direction. Actuation of the rod 20 to open the valve 11 when there is no pressure on the seat back allows the compression spring la to return the seat back to a vertical position. The length of the cylinder 1 can be varied by adjusting an end screw cap 2.
