Abstract

926,541. Incubators. MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE, FISHERIES & FOOD. Sept. 4, 1959 [June 5, 1958], No. 17985/58. Class 5(2). An incubator for cultivating bacteria, moulds or tissue comprises a container which may either be maintained fluid-tight or may be provided with a controlled, constant or intermittent supply and exhaust of air, the container comprising an observation panel and a door in the wall thereof, and having an air circulating system, heating means controlling the temperature of the circulating air, a culture flask carrier, and means external to the container for moving the carrier to bring the flasks into register with the observation panel. The incubator comprises a casing 13 of polished aluminium and fibre glass mounted on an annular base 1 of concrete covered with a layer 2 of asphalt and a layer 3 of waterproof cement, and provided with an observation door 19 of transparent material such as armoured glass. Bacteria can thus be inspected whilst being cultivated and sterilized within the incubator, without the risk of infection being incurred. The casing contains a circular rack 21 for culture flasks 22, mounted on a rail 23 fixed to the base 1 of the incubator. In order to bring the various culture flasks into register with the transparent door 19, the rack is rotated on the rail 23 by means of a motor 24 mounted on the top of the incubator and driving a sprocket wheel 27 which in turn drives a chain 28 fixed to the rack. The bacteria within the culture flasks 22 are cultivated by circulating a current of warm air round the incubator by means of a fan heater unit 36, 37 detachably mounted within a duct 32 suspended from the top of the incubator, and controlled by thermostats 45 coupled to a control panel 46. The culture is sterilized by feeding water into the well formed within the annular base 1, and boiling the water by circulating steam round the coils of a steam pipe 12, the steam so generated being circulated round the incubator with the air. By operating the wheel 11, the plug 8 is then raised from the outlet 4 of the well, and the water is thereby drained off, and in order to cool the incubator after the sterilization process, a strong current of cold air is passed through it via the inlet and outlet pipes 40, 41, these pipes being provided with valves 42. Bleed pipe lines 43 and 44, fitted with valves for controlling the rate of flow of air therethrough, provide a means of gradually changing the air within the incubator without causing variations in the temperature. Control culture flasks may be housed in a stationary rack 47, and then observation facilitated by one or more fluorescent light tubes 48.
