Abstract
925,695. Thermal switches. H. M. C. OF HARTFORD Ltd. Sept. 5, 1961 [Oct. 10, 1960], No. 34661/60. Class 38 (5). In a slow break electric switch the fixed contact 7 is mounted on a pair of spaced heatexpansible metal members 8, 9 arranged to deflect the contact if heated differentially, the electrical connection to the contact 7 being made through one member 8 only with the result that on engagement of contacts 3, 7 resistance heating expands the member 8 and deflects the contact 7 downwards to increase contact pressure ; likewise, on breaking of the contacts, rapid cooling increases the contact separation. The effect is to reduce sparking at the contacts. Heating of the contacts due to sparking or high contact resistance does not affect the operation of the switch since both members 8, 9 are then heated equally. The switch shown is operated by a plunger 2 connected to a suitable thermal element. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the fixed contact assembly is applied to a snapaction switch in order to reduce or increase its temperature differential.
