Two columns 12, 13 of storage crates form a mechanised storage garage, Fig. 1, in which each crate can move in a step-by-step rectangular path through a loading point 56 and between the columns. The weight of each column is supported by a raising or lowering mechanism. As shown, racks 29 formed on the exterior faces of the crates 11, Fig. 4, are engaged by pinions 38, Fig. 5, for vertical movement, and by pinions 45, 51 for inter-column transfer. A flange 30, Fig. 5, along the width of upper frame member 22 of a lower crate engages a channel 32 of the crate above and interlocks the crates vertically but allows movement horizontally. Guards 54, 55 maintain the crates in vertical alignment. Vertical movement of the columns may charge a spring for operating the transfer mechanism. In the first Provisional Specification the crates are provided with lugs engaging vertically moving endless chains. The device may also be used in a kitchen cabinet.
