Abstract

A herbicidal composition comprises a herbicidal dipyridylium quaternary salt in which the pyridylium rings optionally have substituents and a chlorosubstituted aliphatic carboxylic acid having 1 to 4 carbon atoms or salt or ester of said acid. The chloro-substituted aliphatic acid and maybe a chloro propionic acid e.g. 2,2-dichloropropionic acid or mono-chloroacetic acid. Specified salts thereof are alkali metal e.g. sodium or potassium salts, ammonium, amine or hydroxy amine e.g. ethanolamine salts and specified esters are those of methanol or ethanol. Specified herbicidal di-pyridylium quaternary salts are 1 : 11-ethylene-2 : 21-dipyridylium salts such as the dibromide and 4 : 41-dipyridylium salts such as 1 : 11-dimethyl - 4 : 4 - dipyridylium dimethosulphate. The dipyridylium quaternary salt may contain one or more substituents e.g. alkyl groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms such as methyl or ethyl (see Specification 857,501). Other specified anions of the dipyridylium salts are chlorides and iodides. The compositions may contain solid or liquid diluents and wetting agents e.g. a p-nonyl phenol-ethylene oxide condensate.
