A steering gear comprising a globoidal worm 2 and roller 8 is characterized by the following features in combination :- (a) The radius R of the arc K, formed from the intersection of a worm longitudinal middle plane and its pitch circle envelope, is greater than the pitch circle radius r of the arc L of the roller 8. (b) The minimum distance A of the pitch circle envelope from the worm centre is such that the smallest worm cross-section is equal to or less than the cross-section of the steering spindle. (c) The steering roller is disposed offset with respect to the median plane E E by an angle a which is less than 10 degrees. Preferably the steering roller 8, imagined as part of a complete worm-wheel, has a number of teeth smaller by 1.5 to 1.8 than the number of teeth of the cutting wheel necessary for producing the worm thread.
