977,434. Toothed gearing. MERRITT & CO. (ENGINEERING) Ltd. Sept. 25, 1963 [July 17, 1962], No. 27411/62. Heading F2Q. In a variable ratio toothed gear mechanism a circular driving pinion 1, concentrically mounted and having all its teeth identical, meshes with a rack or sector 2 having at least one group of teeth of progressively varying form and pitch. In a vehicle steering gear, a rack has a central section 2 with teeth 3 at a minimum pitch, end sections 2a with teeth 8 at a maximum pitch, and transition sections 2b having progressively varying tooth pitch. At sections 2a the straight sided teeth 8 have a larger contact angle than the teeth 3 at section 2, so that the effective pitch circle 10 of the pinion 1 when meshed with section 2a is of greater diameter than the effective pitch circle 4 of the pinion when meshed with section 2. At sections 2b, the rack pitch line 12 is not linear, and the pitch line 11 of the pinion is not circular, the rack being accelerated when these sections pass under the pinion. A method of constructing the profiles of the transition teeth is described. The pinion 1 may be driven directly by a hand wheel, or through reduction gears which may themselves be of variable ratio, and a servo mechanism may be combined with the gearing mechanism of the invention.
