Abstract

924,172. Electromagnetic switches. ALLEN WEST & CO. Ltd. Sept. 26, 1961 [Sept. 27, 1960], No. 33143/60. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] The housing of an electric switch, e.g. an electromagnetic contactor, is in two parts, the base, Fig. 1, being provided with sockets 22, terminals, and the main fixed contacts, and the body part, Fig. 12, being provided with complementary plugs and carrying all the moving parts of the contactor, the two parts being plugged together. As shown in Fig. 1, three pairs of main contacts 20 are provided in separate chambers 19 which are ribbed to prevent tracking. The chambers are separated by ribs 18 which have the sockets 22 formed in their widened ends. In each socket is a socket contact which is connected to its respective terminal 14. The base is clamped to the body part by a U-shaped member provided with two upstanding arms 17. The body part is provided with eight plugs 32, and includes an armature (not shown) pivoted at 66 by spring clips 66<SP>1</SP> to a plate 65 which is secured to a U-shaped insulating actuator 40 carrying three spring- mounted bridging contacts 39, which cooperate with their respective main contacts 20 on the base. The armature and actuator, which are reciprocable in slots provided in a box-like structure 30, are biased upwards by four springs 62. Four auxiliary contact sets are provided, being either normally open or closed. The moving contact 58 of each auxiliary set is loosely mounted on an upwardly-biased rod 54 which passes through a contact carrier 55. The contact 58 is spring-urged into engagement with the lower face of the contact carrier. An E-shaped stator, not shown, is loosely mounted in the body part and its winding is secured to the centre limb of the E by a U- shaped spring blade (Fig. 14, not shown). The base and body part are plugged together, electrically connecting the terminals 14 to the auxiliary contact sets. When the stator is energized the armature is attracted, first depressing the contact carriers 55 and operating the auxiliary contact sets and then closing the main contacts 20, 39.
