Abstract

923,893. Converting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 12, 1959 [Aug. 14, 1958], No. 26173/58. Class 38 (2). To improve the power factor of an electric converting arrangement comprising a transformer 2 and rectifying elements 6 supplying a load 7 a capacitative reactance 14a is provided at the A.C. side and an additional arrangement of controllable rectifying elements 9 whose output is short-circuited is also provided. The capacitative reactance is chosen to give optimum power factor at zero D.C. volts, and the additional rectifiers are controlled to maintain this optimum condition as the D.C. volts rise. The rectifiers 6 and 9 may be grid-controlled mercury arc rectifiers and may be fed from a common secondary winding. The rectifiers 9 may be short-circuited through a smoothing choke and may be controlled to compensate for voltage drop in the line. The capacitative reactor may be a capacitor or a capacitor in association with a machine. Filters 14b, 14c may be provided for harmonic currents. The capacitor 14a may be on either the primary side or the secondary side of the transformer 2. Polyphase arrangements are described.
