923,184. Uniting threads by adhesives. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. May 2, 1960 [March 30, 1960], No. 15384/60. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group IX] Weftless tape comprises a plurality of parallel textile strands predominantly composed of continuous and aligned filaments, secured together in side-by-side arrangement by a flexible film-forming plastic, at least every alternate strand containing some surface filaments with portions extending outwardly from the strand surface in overlapping and engaging relationship with an adjoining strand. Suitable continuous filaments are natural silk, glass, artificial cellulosic filaments such as rayon, synthetic resin filaments such as nylon, polyesters, olefins, and acrylic compounds. Suitable film-forming plastics are viscose, water-soluble and alcohol-soluble cellulose ethers, organic solvent soluble cellulose esters and ethers, glue, gelatine, casein, vinyl resins, nylon, polyester and acrylic resins, natural and synthetic rubber latices and solutions. The plastic may contain plasticizers, softeners, dyes and pigments. The strands may be untwisted bundles of continuous filaments or yarns of continuous filaments that have a low or a higher twist. The strands may also be two or more bundles or yarns that have a low or higher twist and which are cabled or plied together to form a cord. Strands with protruding filaments may be made by drawing the strands over a rough or cutting surface stretching them to break surface filaments or subjecting them while untensioned to a stream of air which loosens surface filaments and forms them into loops or whorls. As shown in Fig. 4, a tape comprises a plurality of strands of continuous filaments. Protruding filaments 29, forming part of strands 27 and 28, extend outwardly from these strands so as to envelope adjacent strands and are embedded in plastic 30. In making the tape, a plurality of strands or yarns having the requisite laterally extending filament portions are drawn from a source of supply, arranged in juxtaposed side-by-side relationship, passed through a bath containing a suitable flexible film-forming plastic binder and then through squeeze rolls.
