Abstract

922,612. Arc welding electrode holders. E. WELKEN. April 21, 1959 [April 21, 1958], No. 13603/59. Class 39 (3). A pivotally mounted electrode holder is so constructed that the holder itself and the parts providing the pivoting movement do not conduct any electricity to the electrode. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, an insulated cable 8 is secured in a tubular support member 1 by a set-screw 28 and has a bared end portion 9 secured by welding or soldering to a contactor 3 which is slidable in a tubular electrode holder 2 of insulating material to an extent determined by a loop 29 in the cable 8. Apertures 13 and 19 in the holder 2 permit the insertion of an electrode 7 between the contactor 3 and a spacing member 11 of insulating material engaged by a spring 12. The holder 2 has threaded spindles 10 carried in bosses 33 on arms 5 fixed to the support member 1. A toothed ring 6 mounted on a square portion 30 of one spindle 10 is pressed into engagement with teeth on one of the bosses 33 by a nut 32 to secure the holder 2 in a selected pivoted position. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 2, not shown), the holder 2 is pivoted to a position at right-angles to the support 1 and the apertures 13 and 19 are displaced through 90 degrees so that the electrode 7 pivots in the plane of the support 1. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, the cable 8 is secured in a clamp 15 on the support member 1 by a screw 27. Arms 5 having bosses 36 mounted on pivots 35 on the member 1 are secured to a ring 14 held on the electrode holder 2 by a threaded cover 25. A contactor 3a screwed on to the bared end portion 9 of the cable 8 has an extension 18 provided with an aperture 4a. A sleeve 16, with a shoulder 23, sliding in the holder 2 contains a spring 12a and a distance piece 21. Pressure on the sleeve 16 brings apertures 13a and 19a surrounded by bosses 26 into line with the aperture 4a to enable an electrode to be inserted. The sleeve 16 may be of insulating material or may be of metal, in which case either the sleeve 16 or the extension 18 is provided with a layer of insulation.
