Abstract

922,222. Reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. April 13, 1960 [April 27, 1959; Sept. 30, 1959], Nos. 14377/59 and 33251/59. Class 39 (4). In a gas cooled nuclear reactor, a sample of the coolant in each fuel channel flows continuously into a precipitation chamber where fusion products are deposited on to a moving tape which passes from the chamber to an external monitor. As shown, the gas ducts 18, 19 connect each precipitation chamber 10 with a fuel element channel. The tape electrode 11 is moved through all the chambers successively by the motor 30, to the monitors 16. The latter are so spaced that on moving 11 from the bank of chambers by a given amount each monitor registers with a section of 11 corresponding to a specified chamber. The device is enclosed in the pressure tight vessel 17 and seal chambers 23 at each end of bank 10 are provided with inactive coolant gas to prevent leakage of active gas from 10. Each channel is connected to two different banks of chambers to form a cross-matrix system. The different banks operate out of phase to detect short pulses of activity. Specification 867,360 and French Specification 1,183,812 are referred to.
