Abstract

A method of producing grey cast iron castings comprises treating molten iron having a low dissolved gas content with carbon dioxide bubbled therethrough, the treatment being effected in the absence of any addition tending to increase the number of eutectic cells in the product, and casting the iron. Carbon dioxide in gaseous form may be used, or a substance generating carbon dioxide, e.g. a carbonate, may be added to the melt. There may also be added to the molten iron one or more of:-(a) Silica flour or calcium fluoride or mixtures thereof. (b) Iron, steel, or copper in small particle form, or silicon carbide, or mixtures thereof. (c) Finely divided aluminium with or without a fluoride, e.g. sodium or potassium fluoride or cryolite.
