A solid state image intensifier comprising radiation-sensitive variable-impedance elements together with electroluminescent elements has two kinds of differently luminescing elements, one kind providing the radiation for the observable image and the second providing radiation for feed-back to the variable-impedance elements. A layer of the second kind of electroluminescent element, which may be fieldenhanced, may be interposed between a layer of the first electroluminescent material and a photo-conductive layer, or there may be a plurality of photo-conductive layers with feedback emitting electroluminescent layers between each such layer. A suitable material of the second kind is red electroluminescent cadmium sulphide or sulphoselenide, or silver and manganese activated zinc sulphide whose luminous output when struck by X-rays is enhanced by the applied electric field.
