Abstract
860,476. Luminescent screens. FERRANTI Ltd. Nov. 20, 1959 [Dec. 8, 1958], No. 39409/58. Class 39(1). A dark-trace cathode-ray tube particularly for use in radar presentation units and oscilloscopes has a double layer phosphor screen, the layer facing the gun comprising an infra-red emitting phosphor and the bottom layer a phosphor which emits light only when irradiated with ultra-violet radiation and in the absence of infra-red radiation. The source of the ultra-violet radiation is an ultra-violet lamp. The infra-red emitting phosphor may consist of zinc cadmium sulphide activated with silver, and the infra-red quenched phosphor of zinc sulphide activated with copper and cobalt. A third layer of transparent silica impervious to electrons but transparent to infra-red radiation may be disposed between the two phosphor layers.
