Abstract

920,875. V.T.O.L. aircraft. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 10, 1959], No. 42096/59. Class 4. A fixed wing V.T.O.L. aircraft includes one or more vertical lift power units 4 and one or more forward propulsion units 7, the latter being so arranged in relation to the aircraft wing as to suck off the boundary layer. The air intakes of units 7, which are of the ducted fan type, communicate through passageways 11, 12 with slots 10 in the upper surface or upper and lower surfaces of the wing. Power units 4 are grouped around the centre of gravity of the aircraft and pivotable slots above and below units 4 permit the entry of air into the intakes of and the exit of exhaust gases from units 4.
