Abstract
<PICT:0920480/III/1> Hydrocarbon solvent is removed from a solution of olefin polymers which are solid at 80 DEG C. by introducing a thread of the solution into the lower part of a column of water, the temperature of the water and the diameter of the thread being so selected that the solvent evaporates as the thread is divided into pieces and the polymer rises towards the surface of the water. Specified solvents are heptane, cyclohexane, benzene and toluene. Referring to Fig. 1, the polymer solution is fed through nozzle 2 into column 5 which contains hot water entering through line 3 and kept hot by live steam through 11. Freed solvent and water vapours are condensed in condenser 11 and separated in decanter 12. The polymer floats on the water and is removed via channel 7 by extractor 8.ALSO:Hydrocarbon solvent is removed from a solution of olefin polymers which are solid at 80 DEG C. by introducing a thread of the solution into the lower part of a column of water, the temperature of the water and the diameter of the thread being so selected that the solvent evaporates as the thread is divided into pieces and the polymer rises towards the surface of the water. Specified olefin polymers are cis1,4-polybutadiene, polypropylene, polybutene, polystyrene, and copolymers of ethylene with propylene and/or butene. Specified solvents are heptane, cyclohexane, benzene and toluene. An apparatus for this solvent recovery is described which comprises a solution inlet nozzle in the lower part of a water column, the top of the column widening and equipped with an overflow channel at the latter end of which there is an air seal through which polymer clots may be withdrawn.
