Abstract

Benzol and naphthalene are extracted with steam from used coke-gas washing oils by passing the wash oil to the top of an exhausting column, feeding steam in at the bottom of the exhausting column, which column is connected to a rectification column so that the steam leaving the exhauster passes to the base of the rectifier and the liquids leaving the base of the rectifier pass to the top of the exhauster, removing the water-saturated benzol vapours from the top of the rectifier, separating the water from said vapours, e.g. by condensing and decanting, returning part of the dehydrated liquid benzol to the top of the rectifier, removing <PICT:0973450/C4-C5/1> all of the liquid which flows from the upper part of the rectifier at an intermediate point of the rectifier, separating the water from said liquids, returning the dehydrated liquid to a point below the intermediate point, withdrawing a dehydrated naphthalene containing oil from the rectifier at a point below the two points referred to above, and removing the benzol and naphthalene free wash oil from the base of the exhauster. The wash oil may be preheated to 150-180 DEG C. The exhauster and rectifier may be superimposed as shown in the Figure, where a single column having 35 washing plates is employed. Wash oil is passed to exhauster E via line 2 and steam via line 3. The water/benzol vapours leave rectifier R and pass to condenser 6 and decanter 8, the benzol being returned in part to R via line 12. The liquid passing down R is withdrawn to decanter 15 via 14 and the dehydrated portion is returned via 17. Dehydrated naphthalene containing oil is removed at 18 and purified wash oil at 4.
