Abstract
<PICT:0414231/III/1> Miscible liquids, of which one at least boils below, and another above 100 DEG C., the higher boiling constituent being immiscible with water, are separated by distillation with steam in a still, the vapours being led first to a fractionating column in which a part of the higher boiling constituent is condensed and removed at the base, while the remainder is condensed with some of the steam in an analysing column and after separation from the water is returned to the still. The process is applied to the distillation of benzolized wash oil which is preheated by passage through an analyser 2 and is then passed through a pipe 17 into the top of a still 1 down which it flows in countercurrent to steam admitted through a pipe 3. The debenzolized oil is run off through a pipe 6. The vapours evolved pass off to a fractionating column 4 in which most of the wash oil carried over is withdrawn through a pipe 15 while the remaining wash oil with some benzol and steam is condensed in the analyser 2, and the condensate is passed to a separator 5 from the bottom of which water is removed through a pipe 19 while the top layer of oil is returned to the still through a pipe 20. If a medium boiling constituent is present this is condensed with some water in an additional analyser, separated from the water, and returned to the column 4. Specification 404,081 is referred to.
