Abstract

A process for preparing thermosetting resins comprises reacting formaldehyde with an addition salt of a polyamine and an ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or a monoester of an ethylenically unsaturated polycarboxylic acid copolymerized before or after salt formation with at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer. The polyamine may be melamine or ethylene diamine. Specified acids are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic and fumaric acids. The comonomers may be alkyl acrylates, methacrylates, maleates or fumarates, styrene, vinyl acetate or acrylonitrile. Polymerization may be effected in the presence of catalysts, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and azo-bisisobutyronitrile, and solvents, e.g. toluene and xylene. After reaction with formaldehyde the products may be etherified, e.g. with methanol, ethanol, butanol, pentanol and dodecanol, in the presence of acid catalysts, e.g. formic, oxalic, phthalic, hydrochloric and phosphoric acids. Examples describe the reaction of formaldehyde and paraformaldehyde with copolymers of (1) melamine monoacrylate, ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, (2, 3 and 5) melamine monoacrylate and methyl methacrylate, (4) melamine monomethacrylate and methyl methacrylate, and (6) ethylene diamine monoacrylate and methyl methacrylate; (7) the reaction of melamine and paraformaldehyde with an acrylic acid-methyl methacrylate copolymer; (8) the reaction with paraformaldehyde and etherification with n-butanol in the presence of formic acid of a copolymer of melamine monoacrylate, methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate; and (9) the reaction with paraformaldehyde and etherification with methanol of a copolymer of melamine monoacrylate and butyl methacrylate. The products may be used for coating glass, steel and copper, and may be cured to an insoluble state by heating.
