Abstract

The invention comprises azo dyes of formula <FORM:0919388/IV (b)/1> wherein X is a carboxylic acid or methoxy group and Y is an azo or azoxy group. The dyes are prepared by reductive linkage of 2 mols of the nitro-disazo dye prepared by coupling the diazo compound of anthranilic acid in acid medium with 2-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid and coupling the monoazo compound so obtained in alkaline medium with the diazo compound of 4-nitro-anthranilic acid or 4-nitro-o-anisidine. The reduction is preferably carried out using glucose in alkaline medium. Alternatively the dye wherein Y is azo and X is methoxy may be prepared by coupling 2 mols of the monoazo dye anthranilic acid --> 2-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid with 1 mol of tetrazotised 4:41-diamino-3:31-dimethoxy-azobenzene. The dyes give blue shades on cellulose fibres and the dyeings are preferably aftercoppered. Examples are given.
