Abstract
918,819. Prestressing concrete tanks &c. PRELOAD INTERNATIONAL Inc. June 27, 1961 [Oct. 5, 1960], No. 23190/61. Class 20 (4). [Also in Group XXIX] A method of prestressing large substantially cylindrical walled concrete structures such as tanks comprising the steps of anchoring one end 24 of a flexible tension member 12, extending along the wall from said anchored end a first length 25, continuously and uninterruptedly elongating said first length whereby a predetermined stress is developed therein, maintaining the elongation of the first length and continuously and uninterruptedly elongating along the wall a second length 30 of the member 12, and repeating this process if required upon one additional length of the member 12 or on several additional such lengths taken in succession, any given length being continuously and uninterruptedly elongated along the wall whilst the elongation of the previous length is maintained, and anchoring the final length of the member 12 after the desired total elongation thereof, the said lengths together constituting at least one convolution about the tank. The elongation of each length of the tensioning member is carried out by means of a jack 26 temporarily fixed to the wall by means of channels 20 or 21, these jacks serving also to maintain the elongation of one length whilst the next length is being elongated by a second jack 32. Rods 28 may be placed in vertical grooves 18 in the wall to reduce friction on the tension member 12. The tension member may be stranded to provide a corrugated outer surface.
