Abstract

918,732. Travelling-wave tubes. MULLARD Ltd. June 11, 1959 [Sept. 11, 1958], No. 29141/58. Class 39 (1). A magnetic focusing system for a travelling- wave tube comprises first permanent magnet means 1, 7 to produce a first uniform magnetic field and a second permanent magnet means 8 to produce a field adjacent the electron gun which converges and then diverges and a magnetic screen 9 arranged between the first and second magnet means to prevent interaction between the two magnetic fields. The permanent magnets 1, 7, 8 are two or more bar magnets evenly spaced around the tube. 1 and 7 are combined with further magnets not shown to produce a uniform field e.g. as in Specification 818,731. Permanent magnet 1 has a polepiece 3 and permanent magnet 8 a polepiece 10; the gun is in a higher magnetic field than is the delay line. The steel screen 9 serves also as a polepiece and may be movable axially or may be replaced by screens of different aperture sizes to alter the magnetic field distribution in the gun.
