Abstract

918,411. Liquid fuel atomizers. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. March 13, 1959 [March 13, 1958], No. 8074/58. Class 75 (1). The sprayer plate 32 of a fuel atomizer has a conical outlet 61 extending outwardly from the discharge orifice 46 and terminating in a sharp annular edge 62. The conical outlet 61 has a vertical angle between 15 degrees less than and 10 degrees greater than the spray angle at full load from a sprayer plate not provided with the conical outlet. The sharp edge 62 is defined by the outlet 61 and a further conical surface forming part of a V-groove on the front face of the sprayer plate. In another embodiment the front face has two V-grooves. The sprayer plate 32, a distance plate 31 and a flange 29 on a distributer head 27 are clamped against a shoulder on an outer barrel 13 by a cap nut 33. The rear part 26 of the distributer head 27 surrounds an inner barrel 14. Fuel passes along the space 45 between the inner and outer barrels 13, 14, through apertures 44, 43 in the flange 29 and distance-plate 31 to six squaresection slots 42 channelled in the rear face of the sprayer plate and leading tangentially into a whirl chamber 41 formed by the sprayer plate and the distance plate. Spill fuel is returned from the whirl chamber through an outlet 48 in the distance plate leading to apertures 49 in the distributer head and to the inner barrel 14. The burner barrels extend through a distance tube (not shown) bearing an impeller at its forward end. The burner fires through a port in a furnace wall. Air is supplied to the furnace port by a register disposed in a wind-box and comprising doors operated by spur-wheels, linkages and a handle. Fig. 7 (not shown) discloses a non-spill type atomizer having a conical outlet from a swirl chamber fed by tangential passages. Fig. 9 (not shown) discloses a further non-spill type atomizer having a conical outlet and a swirl chamber defined by a cylindrical rearward extension of the sprayer plate. Fuel enters the chamber through axially-spaced tangential inlets which are uncovered in sequence by a plunger as the fuel pressure increases. The plunger is connected to a bellows and a biasing spring.
