Abstract

Hair may be cleaned by the use of a porous flexible material, e.g. a cotton fibre textile or a foamed synthetic rubber such as polyurethane, which contains a gel, the dispersion medium of which is a neutral non-toxic organic liquid which is a solvent for the natural oil of the hair, e.g. ethanol or n- or isopropanol, which may be expressed from the porous flexible material by pressure when applied to the hair. The disperse phase of the gel is suitably a synthetic polymer hydrophilic colloid, particularly a vinyl polymer substituted with carboxy groups which are neutralized with tri-ethylamine. The gel may also include small amounts of water, ethylene or propylene oxide adducts such as the ethylene oxide condensates with an alkylphenol or a fatty acid, methanol (present in industrial methylated spirit), and perfume.
