917,216. Obstetric appliances. HEYNS, O. S. July 29, 1959 [July 31, 1958], No. 26053/59. Class 81 (2). A device for applying reduced pressure to the abdomen during the early stages of childbirth comprises a flexible sack-like enclosure 10 which, at its upper end 12, closely engages around the patient's chest and back and has stiffening means 24 which holds it clear of the abdomen. The interior is connected through a tube to an evacuating pump and this causes reduced pressure to be applied to the abdomen while the remainder of the enclosure collapses on to the legs &c. and prevents these parts being subjected to the low pressure. The stiffening means may be in the form of hoops, as shown, a rigid frame comprising a backing plate coacting with an arched front section or an annular hollow cushion which is rendered substantially rigid by fluid pressure. In a simplified form of the apparatus, which avoids the use of an external pump, the stiffening member is made from stout rubber, with its front part of domed shape. This is forced inwards to expel the enclosed air through a non-return valve and is then allowed to return to its original shape, so inducing the desired degree of vacuum.
