Abstract

1277318 Medical splint VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT GORNOSPASATELNOGO DELA 25 June 1970 30831/70 Heading A5R Orthopaedic apparatus comprises an inflatable splint 1 that may be fastened to a patients limb and inflated by a working fluid, the splint being connected by conduits 2, 3 to a heat exchanger 4 comprising two communicating vessels 9, 10, one disposed within the other, each vessel being provided with a fluid pressure control valve 16, 17, said external vessel 9 being filled with working fluid 13 and the internal vessel 10 being filled with a cooling agent 15. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, solid carbon dioxide 15 sublimes, cooling the water 13 and the vapour passes into vessel 9 via orifice 12 forcing the water into the splint. The splint, which is formed of rubber impregnated fabric, comprises a series of tortuous internal passages 22. The internal wall (24) of the splint is made of a set of porous plastics insulating panels that may be removed or fixed to the splint in order to localise the cooling effects of the liquid. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, the water may be directed round the system by a pneumatic pump 25, operated by the pressure of vapour in conduit 27, (Fig. 4, not shown). Diaphragm (31) is forced from an upper to a lower position whereby the working fluid delivered from the splint 1 is forced from the chamber (41) into the external vessel 9 through valve (30) and the T-piece 26. Rod (32) follows the motion of the diaphragm (31), whereby the return spring (33) is compressed and the arm (35) turns from the upper position to the lower one. The cut-off spring (37) abruptly throws over the arm (36) from the upper position. As a result, the inlet valve (38) closes and the outlet valve (39) opens. The gas that has been fed into the chamber (34) is let out into the atmosphere. When the pressure inside the chamber (34) drops to atmospheric and the diaphragm (31) through the action of the return spring (33) rests on its extreme upper position, the arm (35) turns from the lower position to the upper one. Simultaneously, the working fluid is sucked to the chamber (41) from the splint 1.
