Abstract
1422007 Intra-aortic balloon TECNA CORP 2 April 1973 [17 April 1972] 15742/73 Heading A5R Intra-aortic apparatus comprises a balloon 11 connected to a chamber for gas flow therebetween, means being provided for varying the volume of the chamber whereby the balloon can be inflated and deflated. The balloon 11 is mounted on a catheter 7 connected to a casing 14 which together with a diaphragm 18 defines the chamber which is supplied with a fixed volume of gas from a supply 32 via valve 33. The diaphragm 18 also closes a further casing 21 to which air is supplied under the control of an actuator 26 to displace diaphragm 18 into contact with the wall of casing 14 thereby inflating the balloon. The actuator 26 operates under the control of a signal from a timer or a signal, which may be dependant on blood pressure, from the patient. The displacement of the diaphragm is varied by mounting diaphragm 18 between casing 14 and a ring on which casing 21 is adjustably mounted by means of screw threads. In a modification two diaphragms are located between casings 14 and 21, the space between the diaphragms being connected to atmosphere for discharge of gas leaking through diaphragm 18. A pressure gauge may monitor any gas leakage.
