Abstract

In an apparatus for measuring the air pressure in pneumatic tyres the open end of a tube 7, carrying a pressure reading scale 60, is inserted in a fluid tight chamber 25, containing mercury 4, connected to a by-pass arrangement 66 and the chamber 25 is mounted within a housing 34 mounted on a support 52 pivotally connected to a stand 55 in such a manner that in the inoperative or horizontal position, Fig. 1 (not shown), the end of the tube 7 is uncovered by the mercury 4 but in the vertical position, Fig. 2, the mercury 4 covers the end of the tube 7 so that pressure passing into the chamber 25 may be measured by the mercury column.in the tube 7. The by-pass 66 is provided with two conduits 67 to connect the apparatus simultaneously to two pneumatic tyres. Each conduit 67 is provided with a balancing valve 68 so that air can flow from one or other of the tyres to the chamber 25. The valves 68 can be opened together to balance the air pressure in the two tyres. The by-pass is connected to a compressor and the tyres can be inflated by depressing a knob 71 and deflated by depressing a knob 70. To prevent an excessive sudden increase in pressure in the chamber 25 the end 69a of the tube 69, Fig. 3, is located in a pocket 72 in the chamber 25 and the cross-sectional area of the space between the tube end 69a and the wall of the pocket 72 is less than the cross-sectional area of the bore of the tube 69.
