Abstract

1436128 Testing plastics tubing WIRSBO BRUKS AB 28 March 1974 [10 April 1973] 17215/73 Heading G1S Plastics tubing 10 hot from extrusion apparatus is moved through seals 3, 5 in a heating chamber 1 placed under vacuum by a suction hose 12 and regulating valve 11 so that any break or disconformity in the tube allows air to be drawn from the interior of the tube or along the outer surface into the vacuum chamber, thereby causing an increase in pressure which is shown on a meter 4. Major changes or ballooning of the tube due to pressure differential indicate for example either a substantial reduction in wall thickness permitting ballooning to occur, or a reduction in cross-linking forces thus permitting ballooning to occur by virtue of the more thermoplastic nature of the material. These effects may be enhanced by supplying gas under pressure to the inside of the tube. A second inlet 23 comprises a pressure switch 8 connected to an electric alarm circuit or relay (not shown). Automatic marking or indicating means may be provided to indicate the area of the fault.
